York Regional Police warns about cell phone scam

York Regional Police are warning the public about an ongoing cellphone upgrade scam involving fraudulent returns of tablets, mobile phones and other devices.

The scam involves suspects posing as representatives of a telecommunications provider while offering discounts, free upgrades or other deals that appear too good to be true.

Victims are persuaded to upgrade their phone, add a new line, or order tablets and mobile devices through their legitimate telecommunications account. In some cases, suspects may ask for account information or guide victims through placing an order themselves using the provider’s official website.

Because the device order is legitimate and connected to the victim’s account, the device is shipped to the victim’s home address.

Once the device arrives, the suspects contact the victim and claim there has been a shipping error, such as the wrong model, colour or device being sent. The victim is then directed to return the device using a prepaid shipping label or QR code provided by the suspects.

These return labels are fraudulent and redirect the devices to the suspects or a third-party location, rather than the telecommunications provider. Victims are left responsible for device financing, outstanding balances and associated monthly service fees for devices they no longer possess.

On August 13, investigators executed a search warrant at a residence in the City of Markham. Approximately $40,000 worth of mobile phones and tablets were recovered as a result. Investigators believe there may be more victims across Canada.

Boran Sun, 22, of Markham, has been charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime in connection to this scam.

Members of the public are reminded to take steps to protect themselves from fraud:

Do not make changes to a telecommunications account at the direction of someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Confirm any upgrades by contacting a store representative. Be cautious of any offer that seems too good to be true.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423.
