Markham Probus Club connects retirees, semi-retirees

A vibrant new chapter in Markham’s social scene began with the launch of the Markham Probus Club, a dynamic community for retirees and semi-retirees seeking meaningful engagement, connection, and enrichment in the next phase of life.

The inaugural meeting was held on July 24 at Grace Anglican Church, celebrating the club’s official founding, introducing its leadership team, and welcoming members to the broader Probus Canada network.

The event’s highlight was a keynote address from the president of Probus Canada, who spoke about the importance of community, lifelong learning, and social connection during retirement. Attendees also enjoyed refreshments, door prizes, and the chance to meet like-minded peers.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the response,” said Renée Procenko, co-president of the Markham Probus Club. “It’s clear there’s a real need for daytime social connection and purpose-driven engagement among retirees in Markham. We’re thrilled to offer a space where friendships can flourish and new adventures can begin.”

Dr. Carolina M. Billings, also co-president, added, “This is about more than just meetings—it’s about building a sense of belonging in the heart of our community.”

With more than 170 members already signed up, the Markham club reflects a growing desire among local retirees to stay active and connected. Across Canada, Probus Clubs have nearly 40,000 members, offering a non-political, non-sectarian environment for mature adults to enjoy speaker series, special interest groups, outings, and volunteer opportunities.

The club meets monthly on the fourth Thursday at Grace Anglican Church and is currently accepting new members.
