An evening with musical brilliance with Virtuosity and Revolution
The Kindred Spirits Orchestra (KSO) invites audiences to an evening of musical brilliance and historical depth with Virtuosity and Revolution on March 21 at 8:00 p.m. at the Meridian Arts Centre – George Weston Recital Hall.
Led by Music Director and Conductor Maestro Kristian Alexander, with internationally acclaimed Italian pianist Antonio Di Cristofano and host Daniel Vnukowski of Classical 96.3 FM, the program explores the intersection of virtuosity, cultural expression, and history through three powerful orchestral masterworks.
The evening opens with Manuel de Falla’s El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat) Suite No. 2, drawn from the composer’s celebrated ballet inspired by Andalusian folk traditions, flamenco rhythms, and the expressive intensity of cante jondo. The original ballet famously featured stage designs by Pablo Picasso, blending music, dance, and visual art into a vibrant cultural collaboration.
The centrepiece of the concert features Antonio Di Cristofano performing Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, a work that merges classical elegance with jazz influences and brilliant orchestral colour. Ravel described the concerto as “a genuine concerto… clearly highlighting the soloist’s virtuosity,” and it remains one of the most beloved works in the piano repertoire.
The concert concludes with Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12. Composed in 1961, the symphony is structured as a continuous four-movement work depicting scenes associated with the October Revolution. Written during a period of intense political scrutiny in the Soviet Union, the piece reflects the complex relationship between artistic expression and state ideology. Today, it is performed internationally as both a dramatic orchestral work and an important historical document of the 20th century.
“This program brings together extraordinary musical colour, virtuosity, and historical reflection,” said Kristian Alexander, Music Director of the Kindred Spirits Orchestra. “From the vibrant rhythms of Spanish folklore to Ravel’s dazzling concerto and Shostakovich’s monumental symphony, audiences will experience music that is emotionally powerful and intellectually compelling.”
A pre-concert talk begins at 7:10 p.m., followed by a prélude pre-concert recital at 7:20 p.m., with the Virtuosity and Revolution concert at 8:00 p.m. A discussion and Q&A with Antonio Di Cristofano and Daniel Vnukowski will take place during intermission.
