Tamil Fest comes to Markham
The Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC) will bring its 11th annual Tamil Fest to Markham on Aug. 22 and 23, transforming Birchmount Road between Aviva Way and Royal Crest Court into a celebration of Tamil culture.
The non-profit organization represents Tamil Canadians through cultural promotion, community engagement, advocacy and representation, as well as youth and arts programming.
This year, Tamil Fest moves to the City of Markham, which has a significant Tamil population, providing a new venue to celebrate and share Tamil heritage with the broader community.
The signature event will feature live music, cultural performances, carnival and rides, vendors and a wide selection of traditional cuisine. Popular dishes will include Kothu roti, hoppers served with sambol or curry, Jaffna-style curries, devilled chicken and seafood, Sri Lankan sweets and more.
Visitors can also explore vendor booths showcasing Tamil-owned businesses offering saris, fusion wear, streetwear, jewellery, accessories, cultural items and other products.
“Tamil Fest is not merely a celebration of our history and our traditions; but rather, it is a living bridge between generations of Tamil Canadians,” says CTC president Sritharan Thurairajah. “What makes this festival unique is its ability to showcase the vibrant resilience, culinary heritage, and artistic traditions of Tamil Canadians on a massive public stage while inviting all of Canada to share in and learn about our identity.”
