Photos help create stories that connect people across cultures and communities

Once upon a time, your phone’s camera roll was a graveyard for random screenshots and forgotten photos. But imagine if those everyday snapshots could become something more—a story, a poem, a piece of art that speaks to your community.

That’s the idea behind Photovoice 2.0, a fully funded creative program from the Cross-Cultural Services Association (TCCSA) that is arriving in Markham this spring.

Running from late April through July, the program invites participants to transform the photos they already take into meaningful storytelling. Through six intensive sessions led by renowned facilitators, participants will explore identity, culture and personal experiences using both images and words.

No fancy camera or professional gear is required—just a phone, curiosity and a willingness to share your perspective.

Throughout the program, participants will pair their photographs with poetry, learning how visual storytelling and written expression can work together to communicate powerful ideas. The work created during the sessions will be compiled into a collaborative zine, showcasing the voices and stories of those involved.

The experience culminates in a public exhibition where participants will present their work to the community, turning personal moments captured on a phone into a shared artistic experience.

By the end of the program, those once-forgotten photos won’t just live on a device—they’ll tell stories that connect people across cultures and communities.
