New health screening program for firefighters
In what’s lauded as the “first of its kind in the Greater Toronto Area,” Markham firefighters will receive a comprehensive health evaluation, including pre-cancer screening, every three years at no cost to them.
The City of Markham, Markham Fire and Emergency Services (MFES) and the Markham Professional Firefighters Association (MPFFA) came together April 29 to announce the launch of the jointly-funded, on-site health screening program.
“The MPFFA is pleased to support this important initiative,” said MPFFA President Andrew Ireland. “April is Cancer Prevention Month, making it a fitting time to launch this program. Firefighters face an elevated risk of cancer due to the lifesaving work we do every day, and protecting the health and safety of our members remains our top priority.”
The program is designed to support the long term well-being of more than 300 Markham firefighters. “We are deeply grateful for the dedication and sacrifice of our first responders,” Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti said. “Investing in advanced, on-site health screening is one way we support those who work every day to keep our community and residents safe.”
Delivered in partnership with United Diagnostic Services, the program will take a fire industry certified mobile diagnostic lab directly to MFES firefighters. Participating firefighters will receive a comprehensive health evaluation, including a full echocardiogram, diagnostic imaging and confidential medical reports prepared by board-certified cardiologists and radiologists. Benefits of the new initiative include earlier detection of cardiac conditions and certain cancers, as well as improved, proactive opportunities for timely preventive care, the City says.
“The health and safety of our firefighters is a top priority for us,” said Markham Chief Administrative Officer Andy Taylor. “This initiative reflects a proactive approach to employee well-being and risk management, ensuring our firefighters have the support and resources they need to stay healthy and protected.”
“MFES proudly places the health and wellness of our firefighters and fire investigators at the forefront of everything we do,” said MFES Fire Chief Chris Nearing. “This initiative showcases the powerful role innovation can play in advancing firefighter health and wellness.”
