New gallery features artworks by Asian artists
A Markham art gallery that exclusively features contemporary artworks by Asian artists and Canadian artists of Asian descent will be the only Markham-based exhibitor at Art Toronto 2024.
SSEW Project, founded by Anita Yuluo Wei early this year, embraces its name to encourage intellectual exchange and inclusive connections with artists, collectors and viewers to sew together a tapestry of artistic and cultural narratives.
As a first-generation Chinese immigrant, the curator is deeply engaged in exploring themes of displacement, memory and immigration. Her work often delves into overlooked narratives embedded within myths, imaginaries and ideologies, especially in cross-cultural contexts with a particular emphasis on the Asian diaspora.
The gallery has collaborated with such contemporary Asian artists as Hui Yu, Kejie Lin and Hayley Chiu. Current exhibits include Anran Guo: With All Due Respect, which runs through October 5.
Located at 333 Denison St., Unit 1, SSEW Project is open Thursdays through Saturdays from 1 to 6 p.m. and Wednesdays by appointment. Art Toronto 2024 is Canada’s oldest and largest international art fair. It runs October 24 to 27 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
