LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program returns

Markham residents can once again do their part in building a “healthier, greener” community by planting native trees at a reduced cost this fall.

“This initiative is a big part of our Trees for Tomorrow commitment – it really helps us build a healthier, greener Markham,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti says of the partnership between the City, York Region, and Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF), now in its seventh consecutive year.

“Every tree we plant makes a difference. It strengthens our urban forest; improves the air we breathe and supports local wildlife,” says Scarpitti. “This program hopefully inspires residents to take action at home to help create a more sustainable future for our city.”

With fall approaching, now is the perfect time to plant, the City advises. Through the LEAF Backyard Tree Planting Program, eligible property owners can choose from more than 30 native tree species and receive personalized planting advice from a certified arborist for $100 per deciduous tree or $50 per evergreen tree (select species only). The program is available to residential, multi-unit and commercial properties, with a limit of five trees per property per year, space permitting.

Each participant receives an in-person consultation with a LEAF arborist, who assesses yard conditions, such as sunlight, soil quality and available space, and recommends species best suited to the site. Full-service planting is available, with LEAF staff returning to complete the planting. A do-it-yourself option is also offered for those who prefer to plant on their own. Detailed care instructions are provided to help ensure long-term tree health and success.

“Planting native trees is one of the most effective ways to improve our urban environment,” says Janet McKay, executive director of LEAF. “From cooling our neighbourhoods to enhancing local biodiversity, the benefits are far-reaching. We’re proud to continue working with the City of Markham to make tree planting more accessible so more residents can contribute to growing a healthier, greener community.”
