Unionville High School brings Newsies to Markham Theatre
Unionville High School’s acclaimed drama program is set to take centre stage this January with a full-scale production of Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical at the Markham Theatre.
Based on the true story of the 1899 Newsboys Strike, Newsies explores themes of youth activism, social justice, and the power of standing up for what’s right — messages that resonate strongly in today’s world.
The production also highlights the value of arts education while showcasing the talent, creativity, and dedication of UHS students. The group collaborated with all four UHS specialized art programs: drama, visual arts, dance and music.
The team invested its entire $46,000 production budget into delivering a professional-calibre show, including authentic set pieces rented directly from Disney’s official Broadway production. A professional fight director was also brought in to coach students in choreography and stage combat.
Evening performances take place on Jan. 9 and Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available through markhamtheatre.ca.
