Terry Fox Run, 45 years and going strong

Forty-five years ago, one young man united this great country with his goal to end cancer.

He passed away June 28, 1981 and now every September, people come together to honour and commemorate Terry Fox’s dream of uniting communities in cities, towns, villages, and hamlets, from coast to coast to coast, as well as internationally, to raise money for cancer research.

“The Markham-Unionville Run site surpassed $1.6 million last year and would like to see this go to $1.7 million this year,” said local run organizer Lilly Ing.

This year, the limited-edition Terry Fox Run shirt features the words ‘Finish It’—a bold tribute to the new brand platform introduced earlier this year, symbolizing a shared commitment to help finish Terry’s marathon against cancer. On the back of the shirt, an image of Terry—seen from behind as he runs forward—represents the millions across Canada and around the world who continue to follow in his lead in the fight against cancer.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 45 years since Terry set out to run across Canada,” says Fred Fox, Terry’s older brother. “Terry understood that cancer research could save lives, and he believed in the power of people coming together. Today, his story is more powerful than ever—and reminds us all of what we can accomplish when we work together.”

Terry’s enduring legacy has inspired people around the world of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Through the generous support of donors, partners, and volunteers, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $950 million and funded over 1,300 innovative cancer research projects, bringing hope and health to millions of Canadians.

Registration is open, and people are being encouraged to sign up now and help take Terry’s Marathon of Hope across the finish line. All proceeds support cancer research in Canada, and there are no registration fees to join. Participants are welcome to walk, run, blade, skate or wheel in the Terry Fox Run.

This year’s Markham-Unionville run starts at Old Unionville Library Community Centre on Sept. 14. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the run starts at 9:30, with the event wrapping up at noon.

Volunteers are needed before and on run day: https://forms.gle/AeRcgNh25ofBHzCV9. All activities are eligible for community involvement hours.
