New long-term care centre coming to Markham
The Mon Sheong Foundation has announced plans to build a new long-term care centre in Markham and another in Whitchurch-Stouffville.
The Ministry of Long-Term Care awarded the Foundation 576 new long-term care bed licences. Of those, 256 have been allocated for a new care centre in Markham and the remaining 320 have been allocated for a new care centre in Whitchurch-Stouffville.
“We sincerely thank the Ontario government for its trust in Mon Sheong,” says Mon Sheong Foundation Chairman Tim Kwan. “This represents a significant commitment, not only to our organization but also to the community as a whole. Building a new long-term care home is no small undertaking and comes with many challenges and complexity.”
The allocation of new bed licences is the first step in a journey that will include working with provincial and municipal governments for required approvals, Kwan notes. “We are deeply grateful to the Ontario government, as well as the City of Markham and the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville for their continued support and confidence, which enable us to move forward with planning new care homes so that more people in need can receive timely and appropriate care.”
The Foundation is focused on the two new long-term care homes currently under construction, CEO Stephanie Wong reports. The new 320-bed Markham centre is in its final phase and is targeted for completion by mid-2026. Construction of a 288-bed centre in Richmond is currently underway and is expected to be completed by end of 2027.
The additional beds are expected to help relieve the community’s pressing demand for care beds, the Foundation says. For more information, visit www.monsheong.org.
