Markham Thai Pongal Vizha celebrates Tamil culture and heritage
The Centre for Tamil Heritage and Culture (CTHC) hosted the annual Markham Thai Pongal Vizha at the Flato Markham Theatre on January 12.
Thai Pongal, a non-religious festival celebrated for over 2,200 years, serves as a Tamil Thanksgiving, honouring nature, livestock, and people who support livelihoods. It coincides with January’s Tamil Heritage Month, which recognizes the contributions of Tamil Canadians. More than 74 million Tamils celebrate globally, including over 300,000 in Canada, predominantly in the Greater Toronto Area.
Markham became the first Canadian municipality to officially recognize Thai Pongal in 2012, declaring January 13–15 as Tamil Heritage Days. Since then, the festival has grown into an event enjoyed by people of all cultures and backgrounds.
This year’s celebration featured live performances by singers, dancers and drummers. MPP Logan Kanapathi, who played a key role in establishing the event over a decade ago, was in attendance and gave a welcome speech. Hundreds of people, from youth to seniors, enjoyed the show, making it one of Canada’s largest Tamil Heritage celebrations.
“We are truly grateful to the volunteers, performers, and leaders who make the Markham Thai Pongal Vizha a resounding success year after year. Your contributions ensure Tamil culture thrives for future generations,” said event MC Sayantha Baskaran.
As a dynamic and growing community, Tamils continue to enrich Canada’s diversity, fostering unity through their vibrant heritage.
The Thai Pongal celebration has been an annual event that the South Asian community looks forward to, as well as one that people of all cultures and demographics enjoy.
