Markham among Canada’s Best Employers

The City of Markham, SE Health, Oak Valley Health and some global companies with a Markham presence are among Canada’s Best Employers for 2023.

The city landed at No. 30 on the list of 300 and ranked in the top three for government services. “This recognition is a testament to the welcoming, diverse and inclusive work environment that has been created at the City of Markham,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

Markham credits its strength as an employer to its People Plan, which focuses on onboarding, providing continuous opportunities for development and learning, numerous wellness initiatives, open communications, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, as well as the success of our recruitment and retention programs,” says CAO Andy Taylor.

Forbes partnered with the market research firm Statista to compile the annual ranking, which is based on a survey of more than 12,000 Canadians working for companies and institutions with at least 500 employees. Evaluations were based on direct and indirect recommendations from employees who were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their employer to friends and family, along with their opinions on work-related topics such as working conditions, salary potential and company image.

SE Health, known as ‘Saint Eliz,’ earned a spot at No. 242. It offers services to help its clients stay in their homes as independently as possible. Oak Valley Health landed at No. 245. It operates Markham Stouffville Hospital and Uxbridge Hospital.

A number of global companies with a large presence in Markham also made the list, including AMD, Aviva Insurance, GE, General Motors, Honda, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, TD Bank and Tesla. Markham-based Pet Valu and the Region of York were also recognized among Canada’s Best Employers.
