Main Street Unionville ‘transformation’ underway

Local businesses will remain open during the Main Street Unionville Restoration, which is underway and expected to be complete by the end of 2025.

“We are thrilled to see the Main Street Unionville Restoration project commence,” Unionville Business Improvement Area (UBIA) Chair Liam O’Dette says. “This initiative will not only enhance our historic charm but also support local businesses, ensuring that our community remains vibrant and welcoming for both residents and visitors during this transformation.”

The project, which will be completed in two phases, will cover the area from the train tracks to north of Carlton Road, including the East Lane from Main Street to Carlton Road. The restoration will focus on critical infrastructure improvements, including the upgrade of watermains and storm sewers, installation of new sidewalks, boulevards, road surfaces and a street light system from Hwy. 7 to Carlton Road, on Carlton Road and the East Lane.

The City of Markham and the UBIA will launch an awareness campaign called ‘Watch the future unfold!’ to support local businesses, which will remain open during the construction period.

“We are committed to ensuring that Main Street Unionville retains its appeal and remains a thriving part of our community,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti says. “This restoration is vital for the long-term sustainability of the area, and we are taking all necessary steps to minimize disruption and support our local businesses during this period.”

The first phase will focus on the East Lane and Carlton Road and is expected to be complete by the end of this year. The second phase is set to get underway next spring. Signage, social media updates and other communication channels will keep the public informed about access routes and the ongoing availability of services and shops.
