Coyotes euthanized following attacks in Markham
Markham leaps to drastic measures following an increase in coyote attacks. Since the start of this year, there have been multiple recorded attacks on residents of Markham, specifically in the vicinity of 16th Avenue and McCowan Road.
The City of Markham released a statement on June 23 stating “the City of Markham made the decision to use escalated measures, which meant capturing the identified coyotes and humanely euthanizing them.”
These actions were taken after consultations with Coyote Watch Canada and Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge.
The decision follows continued attacks on Markham’s youth since the start of this year, including an attack on a young child and a bite on a female teenager, sending both to the hospital on separate occasions.
The exact number of coyotes that have been euthanized has not been made public at this time.
The city is responding to reports of another coyote suffering from a skin disease. The animal is not displaying any abnormal behaviours, so the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre are hoping to treat and rehabilitate it.
