Community stars shine at theatre awards

Artists and arts supporters met Oct. 19 at the Markham Theatre for the annual Markham Performing Arts Awards, an evening of celebration and recognition.

“The Markham Performing Arts Awards were created to shine a light on the many artists, groups, and partners who helped bring Markham in this theatre to life,” said Flato Markham Theatre General Manager Scott Hill.

“The four categories reflect the heart of what we do here. The community group of the year, the partner of the year, the ambassador of the year, and the professional artist of the year. “Tonight, we honour the exceptional people and organizations who have helped shape our stage, our community, and our shared love of live performance,” said Hill.

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti announced the winners and presented the awards. Canadian artist Cathy Mark specially commissioned the one-of-a-kind awards for the evening.

“There are some interesting stories behind the awards, and the connection that they’ve made to the award recipients, and the contributions that they have made,” Scarpitti said. “Those stories remind us how fortunate we are to have these people who care so deeply about arts and culture in our community.”

Community Group of the Year went to Canada One Family Networks, which supports traditional, cultural heritage, and performing arts.

“Through music, dance, they bring cultural traditions to life, inviting audiences to share the pride and joy of the many communities they represent,” said Scarpitti.

Community Partner of the Year went to Markham Review. Scarpitti was effusive in his presentation, saying, “The Markham Review connects our theatre with the wider community, giving our performances a regular spotlight and helping audiences discover the artists and events that we bring to this stage.”

The Ambassador of the Year went to well-known community member Eric Tappenden.

“Eric Tappenden has been a champion of this theatre for many years, giving his time, expertise, and support in bringing outstanding performances to the City of Markham,” said Scarpitti.

The final award, Professional Artist of the Year, went to Classic Albums Live, a frequent presenter at the theatre and one of the evening’s special musical guests.

The theatre celebrated its 40th anniversary last year and remains the local entertainment hub for arts lovers of all ages and backgrounds.
