Dancing through the decades

Step Out Dance (SOD) celebrates its 20th year of providing a safe place for students to express themselves and grow through dance.

Originally, the organization included only a handful of schools, but it has since grown to about 30 elementary and secondary schools. SOD continues to create opportunities for York Region students to build confidence, develop their skills and connect with others who share a passion for the arts.

“It’s really about just bringing kids together, showcasing their amazing talents, and seeing kids being able to show their excellence in different ways,” said Omari White, Founder of the Step OUT Dance Competition and a former YRDSB teacher and administrator.

SOD holds an annual event where student teams create and practise their routines. Students express how much the SOD environment empowers and encourages them to excel. From the welcoming atmosphere of fellow students to the excitement of competition, students’ love for the art of dance continues to grow.

“This is my first year in dance club, and I think it’s one of the best experiences so far,” said Vincy, Grade 8 student at Beckett Farm P.S. “I think one of my favourite things about dance here is that everyone is just so welcoming, and I feel like I really belong here.”

As SOD marches past its 20th anniversary, the community continues to thrive. Many former students come full circle, returning to the event as coaches or mentors for the next generation of dancers.
