YRP reminds residents to protect against vehicle break-ins

Following a re-emergence of overnight thefts, York Regional Police is reminding residents to take precautions when leaving valuables in unattended vehicles.

In recent incidents, suspects have been observed overnight in neighbourhoods between Bathurst Street and Leslie Street. Suspects approach vehicles parked on streets and in driveways, enter unlocked vehicles, and steal valuables.

Thieves commonly target cash, wallets, credit and bank cards and other small items of value.

This type of theft occurs all across York Region.

York Regional Police would like to remind citizens to be cautious and protect themselves by always locking your vehicle, making sure the windows are rolled up and never leaving keys behind. If you have a garage, park inside it and lock the vehicle as well as the garage doors.

If possible, keep your vehicle in a well-lit area and consider installing security cameras.

Most importantly, don’t leave anything valuable, including identification, wallets or cash, inside unattended vehicles. Criminals are opportunists. Do not give them the opportunity to make you a victim of crime.

If you witness any suspicious people or activity, or are a victim, contact the York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423.
