Read between the lines: Markham’s libraries are more than just books

The Markham Public Library (MPL) provides much more to the public than meets the eye. Of course, MPL offers a wide range of books, comics, and magazines, as it always has, but its services go far beyond that.

Through many partnerships, MPL helps residents with many logistical aspects of their lives, including settlement, employment, education, health, culture, and sustainability.

For example, the library hosts free homework help in collaboration with York University. The library also holds Hearing Screening Clinics for infants in collaboration with Oak Valley Health.

MPL’s new CEO, Andrea Cecchetto, has begun running the scene, taking control of everything the library offers.

“We also help residents develop the digital skills needed to thrive through technology access, training, and hands-on learning opportunities,” Cecchetto said. “Our five makerspaces give community members access to tools such as 3D printers, laser cutters, design software, and specialized equipment, along with training and mentorship to support creativity and innovation.”

Markham libraries also provide other amenities, including access to toys, household equipment, bicycles, instruments, and dementia care kits.
