Young women can apply for firefighting camp

For the first time, the City of Markham has been selected as host city for Camp Molly.

The four-day camp is dedicated to inspiring young female and non-binary youth aged 15 to 18 by showcasing firefighting as a viable and rewarding career. It takes place from July 10 to 13. The deadline to apply is May 10.

“Camp Molly lets young people know that gender is not a barrier to a career in the fire service and empowers them to see their potential and capabilities,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “We are proud to host this camp in Markham and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community.”

Participants will complete training in fire suppression, auto extrication, firefighter survival and more. They’ll also learn about various branches of the fire service, including fire prevention, fire investigations, public education and medical response.

Camp Molly aims to challenge and change the way attendees see themselves, fostering confidence and leadership skills. Honouring Molly Williams, North America’s first known female and first known black firefighter, the program was launched in 2019 and has expanded across Canada.

“Hosting Camp Molly reaffirms Markham Fire and Emergency Services’ commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion,” Fire Chief Chris Nearing says. “Having a diverse team of first responders allows us to serve our community in a thoughtful and inclusive manner.”

The camp concludes with a ceremonial graduation. Registration is now open and interested applicants are encouraged to visit Camp Molly’s website for more information and to complete the registration process.
