Volunteers bring colour, connection and community spirit to Union Villa

Five resident activity rooms at Union Villa are getting a fresh new look, thanks to the employees from Foss National Leasing who volunteered their time to paint the spaces.

The volunteers spent a full morning bringing the project to life, creating brighter, more welcoming spaces for residents to gather, socialize, participate in recreation programs and spend time with family and friends.

The colours were selected by residents on each unit and informed by DementiAbility principles, which recognize the important role that the physical environment can play in supporting people living with dementia. Thoughtfully designed spaces can help residents navigate their surroundings, feel more comfortable, and remain engaged and independent. Union Villa trains all staff in DementiAbility principles and incorporates them into its approach to resident care and the design of its environment.

“Something as simple as a fresh coat of paint can make a meaningful difference when it is thoughtfully designed around the people who use the space,” said Abby Katz Starr, president and CEO of Unionville Home Society, which operates Union Villa. “What makes this project particularly special is that our residents had a voice in choosing the colours for their own activity rooms. The refreshed rooms will serve as welcoming spaces for recreation, social activities, programs and meaningful connections among residents, families, staff and volunteers.”

Unionville Home Society extends its sincere appreciation to Foss National Leasing and its employees for helping make a positive difference in the daily lives of Union Villa residents.

The project is also a reminder of the meaningful impact corporate volunteers can make in their communities. By giving their time, energy and skills, the Foss National Leasing team helped create spaces that residents will enjoy and use every day.
