Region recognized once again for budget excellence
York Region has once again been recognized for budget excellence, receiving the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its 2025 budget.
“To receive this recognition for 21 consecutive years is a testament to the prudent planning, dedication and professionalism of York Region’s leadership and staff,” says King Township Mayor Steve Pellegrini, chair of Finance and Administration.
“This achievement demonstrates the Region’s ongoing excellence in budgeting and its commitment to fiscal accountability and strategic financial planning,” York Region Chairman and CEO Eric Jolliffe adds.
The GFOA is an association that serves more than 20,000 government finance professionals across North America. The award recognizes a government’s commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting and publishing high-quality budget documents that satisfy national guidelines, the Region reports.
Its 2025 Budget also received Special Recognition for Strategic Goals and Strategies, a recognition awarded when all three independent reviewers rate the budget document as ‘outstanding’ in a specific area. York was awarded the Triple Crown medallion by the GFOA earlier this year in recognition of receiving all three GFOA awards for the 2023 fiscal year: the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting, Distinguished Budget Presentation Award and Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award.
The Region tabled the 2026 Budget on Thursday, Oct. 23. Departmental presentations will be presented to Committee of the Whole on Thursday, Nov. 6, with Council consideration on Thursday, Nov. 27.
