Petition leads to community safety meeting
On November 8, over 300 residents, community leaders, and government officials gathered at the Markham Civic Centre for a meeting titled “Stop Crimes. Safer Community: Review the Canadian Criminal Code and Bail System Petition.” Cathy Ru, Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, and Regional Councillor Alan Ho organized the event.
York Regional Police officials, including Deputy Chief Paulo Da Silva, Superintendent Sony Dosanjh, Inspector Brad Weick, and Inspector Mike Elliott, provided the latest crime data and updates on community safety.
The meeting aimed to address growing concerns about crime and the effectiveness of Canada’s criminal laws and bail system. Representatives from all three levels of government, York Regional Police officials, legal experts, and Neighbourhood Watch members participated in discussions.
Cathy Ru, Chair of Markham Community Alliance, highlighted several relevant cases during her address. She pointed out that many car theft suspects, once arrested, were quickly granted bail and released, with some criminals even exploiting minors to commit illegal activities. Her group initiated a petition on October 6, which garnered over 5,500 signatures. It advocates for stricter bail measures for individuals involved with violent crimes or repeat offenders, with the intent of keeping our community safer.
Paul Chiang, MP for Markham-Unionville, discussed the federal government’s efforts to advance Bill C-21, a federal gun control bill.
Ho highlighted the meeting’s reflection of public concern and widespread support for change: “The meeting not only reflected residents’ concerns about public safety but also demonstrated strong support for reforms to the criminal and bail systems.”
Moving forward, Markham Community Alliance will continue to collaborate with the community and officials to promote community safety and work toward creating a safer living environment for Markham residents.
