Ontario encourages vaccination as flu season gets underway
Flu season has officially arrived, and Ontario is once again offering free flu and COVID-19 vaccines to help keep communities healthy.
Local health professionals are stressing the importance of getting vaccinated early to protect both yourself and those at higher risk.
“It also helps prevent the spread of this disease to vulnerable populations whose immune systems are not as well-equipped to fight the flu, such as the elderly, young children and infants, pregnant individuals, and people with chronic health conditions,” said Dr Alissa Kong, pharmacist at Unionville Guardian Pharmacy.
Health officials recommend receiving both vaccines every fall to guard against the respiratory viruses currently circulating. Getting the flu and COVID-19 shots at the same appointment is not only safe, but also encouraged to reduce the need for multiple visits. MPP Billy Pang recently set the example, receiving both free shots at the Guardian Pharmacy.
Ontario’s flu season typically runs from November to April. “This is quite the wide range… It’s never too late to get vaccinated,” said Kong.
For anyone looking to stay protected, the best time to get your shots is now.
