Movember continues to grow in Canada for 20 years
Movember is here once again with more ways to show support. Since its beginning, Movember has sparked millions of conversations, raised more than $2 billion CAD, and funded over 1,300 projects globally, tackling the biggest issues facing men, from mental health and suicide prevention to prostate and testicular cancer.
“At Movember, we continue to be committed to changing the face of men’s health. The harsh reality is that globally, we lose one man to suicide every minute of every day; prostate cancer is estimated to be the second most diagnosed cancer in men; and testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men,” says Todd Minerson, Country Director for Movember Canada. “Our fathers, partners, brothers, and friends are facing a health crisis, and we can’t afford to stay silent. That’s why we’ll continue to make noise, to push boundaries, and to help shape the health and well-being of men for generations to come. Because we know that healthier men make healthier families, communities, and societies.”
As Movember celebrates its 20th year, it kicks off its new Make a Growmitment campaign where friends challenge each other to grow a Mo and raise awareness and funds for the cause.
Movember can be much more than growing facial hair; you can support the cause in other ways, too. Move for Mental Health is another challenge Movember offers. Individuals are tasked with running/walking 60km throughout the month to represent the 60 men we lose to suicide every hour, worldwide.
Movember has helped support the development of five life-extending therapies, three PET imaging radiotracers, and a revolutionary blood test – including two of the most significant medical breakthroughs in the management of advanced prostate cancer in the 21st century: scans that can detect the smallest of tumours once they have spread outside the prostate and radioactive molecules that can destroy cancer cells without damaging surrounding healthy tissue.
November isn’t just a time to cozy up for winter; it’s a great time to do something for a good cause. For more information, visit movember.com.
