Markham proposes 3.88% tax increase in 2025 budget

Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti presented a budget that will increase local taxes by 3.88 per cent next year.

In monetary terms, the increase will amount to $53.54 for the average Markham home on the city portion of your 2025 tax bill. This is in addition to the amount that will be added by York Region and the school boards.

In presenting his $674.7 million budget, Scarpitti said he aimed to enhance city services, ensure facilities are well maintained, guard against the impacts of climate change and do so while investing in local programs.

The mayor said the budget was designed to support residents and businesses during continued uncertain times while making important investments in strengthening the community.

“This year’s budget will make necessary infrastructure investments to keep our community strong and resilient while maintaining our assets in a state of good repair,” said Scarpitti. “This milestone budget keeps affordability in mind while continuing to operate an efficient government with strong fiscal management.”

Spending highlights include:

• $81.7 million investment in flood control, stormwater management construction, ponds and culverts.
• $40.3 million in road repairs, rehabilitation and traffic management improvements
• $10.3 million for constructing and maintaining parks and trails
• $6.7 million for incorporating technology to modernize systems and services
• $12.1 million for keeping city facilities in good condition through exterior and interior improvements and repairs.

A 3.05 per cent water rate increase is included to support water and wastewater services representing an increase of $31.51 for the average home in Markham.

The budget also shows the Celebrate Markham program will receive a financial boost of $92,500 to $462,500 to assist with ongoing events such as the Markham Village Music Festival, Markham Jazz Festival, Taste of Asia and the Unionville Festival.
