Markham among Canada’s Best Employers again

The City of Markham and a number of global companies with a large presence in Markham have been recognized among Canada’s Best Employers 2026 by Forbes.

“Six years and still going strong. Ranking third best city in all of Canada this year keeps Markham at the top of the municipal sector,” says Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

The City of Markham ranked 15th overall for Government Services. “This recognition speaks to our commitment to creating a workplace where people excel and are fully engaged in meaningful work for our community,” Scarpitti says. “Thanks to our senior management team and every member of our staff who contribute to making our organization an incredible one.”

This year’s ranking, produced in partnership with market research firm Statista, reflects the survey responses of more than 37,000 Canada-based employees working for businesses with at least 500 workers in Canada. Participants – who remained anonymous so they could answer freely – were asked if they would recommend their employer to others and to rate it based on a range of criteria, including compensation packages, work flexibility, training opportunities and leadership programs. Participants were also asked if they would recommend employers they knew within their industry or through friends or family who worked there.

The responses were tallied and combined with survey data from the last three years, which allowed for a more long-term assessment of organizations that ranked well over the past few years versus companies that may have had just one good year. The more recent data and survey responses from current employees were weighted more heavily than others. Ultimately, each employer was given a score and the 300 organizations with the highest scores made the ranking.

The City says its strength as an employer comes from its commitment to a learning-focused workplace rooted in open communication, diversity and inclusion, and a culture of recognition and appreciation. It brings that commitment to life through programs and initiatives such as its Rewards and Recognition Program, Learning Catalogue, Diversity Action Plan, Eliminating Anti-Black Racism Plan and Multi-Year Accessibility Plan, and more, it adds.

“As a values-driven organization, the City of Markham is focused on creating a workplace where employees feel valued, empowered and supported,” says CAO Andy Taylor. “Through our commitment to delivering exceptional services by exceptional people, we are focused on meeting the evolving needs and expectations of the community we serve.”

The 11th annual list of Canada’s Best Employers also includes AMD, GE, Enbridge, Honda Canada, Huawei, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Oak Valley Health and TD Bank Group. “These employers continue to contribute significantly to Markham’s reputation as a world-class city offering high quality jobs and attracting and retaining top global talent,” says the City.
