Main Street Markham celebrates holiday magic
The holiday season returns to Markham Village with the annual Festival of Lights on Nov. 27, bringing families, friends, local businesses and community organizations together for an evening of music, entertainment, fireworks and holiday traditions.
The free celebration features the official Christmas tree lighting, Santa’s arrival, spectacular fireworks and live local entertainment, including the Wind Symphony ensemble from Markham District High School, roaming carollers from Unionville Theatre Company, and two exciting fire shows by NorthFire Circus. New this year, visitors can explore the Winter Village Market and visit Santa’s Village. The Markham Guild of Village Crafts will also unveil a new Community Crochet Holiday Tree, following last year’s popular Crochet Granny Square Tree.
For more than four decades, the Festival of Lights has brought people together in Markham’s historic district. It is an opportunity to make memories, support local businesses and talent, give back and celebrate the season together.
“As a Markham Village resident, I’m especially proud to see our community come together for this celebration,” said Mary Pan, Executive Director of Markham Village BIA. “The Festival of Lights brings neighbours, families, businesses and community organizations together to showcase local talent, support local businesses and create wonderful memories. It truly takes a village to come together, give back and celebrate the season.”
The holiday festivities continue on Nov. 28 with the annual Santa Claus parade. It starts on Main Street and Hwy 7 at 11 a.m. and heads north to the Markham Museum. The parade will have a variety of community floats, marching bands, and entertainers.
