Founding Catholic high school marks anniversary

York Catholic District School Board’s (YCDSB) founding high school celebrated its 50th anniversary with a mass celebrated by six priests, speeches by board officials and local elected representatives, student performances and more.

St. Robert Catholic High School in Thornhill marked its anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 4 with students, staff, families, alumni, community members and elected officials.

Founded as an elementary school in 1967, St. Robert was transformed into a secondary school in 1975 that initially educated 400 students. It now serves about 1,700 students and offers an International Baccalaureate program.

“St. Robert’s holds a special place in the YCDSB’s history,” said Elizabeth Crowe, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “It was our first secondary school and originally served all of York Region. So many York Region residents have fond memories of their time at St. Robert’s.”

“Thanks to a dedicated staff, St. Robert’s has created a culture of excellence,” said Director of Education John De Faveri. “Generations of St. Robert alumni credit this school with starting them on the path that led to success in all areas of their lives.”
