Do you want to run in upcoming municipal election?

As the municipal election approaches, anyone interested in making a difference in their community is encouraged to run for Markham City Council or one of the two local school boards.

“Local government and school boards deliver important services that residents rely on every day,” the City says. “Help build Markham’s future and shape an engaged, diverse, thriving and vibrant city.”

Candidates can register online using Election Markham’s secure nomination portal until August 19 at 2 p.m. Step-by-step instructions on how to register as a candidate are available at The Association of Ontario Municipalities (AOM) offers a guide with information about life is like as an elected member of a municipal council. It also offers information on who can be a candidate.

Voters will have 250 hours to cast their ballots online or in person in the election from October 14 to 24 for the offices of the mayor, regional councillor, ward councillor and school board trustee. “Think about all the services your municipal government is responsible for providing,” the AOM says.

“Roads. Public transit. Child Care. Local policing. Water and sewers. Ambulances. Parks. Recreation. Learn who in your community best represents your position on the issues that mean the most to you and your family.” Check that you are on the voters’ list for municipal elections.

Any person, corporation, or trade union that plans to spend money on political advertisements during the 2022 Markham Municipal Election needs to register as a third party advertiser online before October 21 at 5 PM. Elections Markham will host two virtual Candidate & Third Party Advertiser Information Sessions on Zoom: Session 1: Thursday, June 9 from noon to 2 p.m. and Session 2: Thursday, July 28 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Elections for municipal government are held every four years on the fourth Monday of October, unless polling day falls on a holiday, in which case polling day is the next succeeding day that’s not a holiday. Visit for more information related to the 2022 Markham Municipal Election.
