On April 17 at approximately 5:10 p.m., a 15-year-old male attended a mall located near Unionville Gate and Kennedy Road in the City of Markham. While at the mall, police say the victim entered a public washroom sometime between 5:40 p.m. to 5:53 p.m. and was sexually assaulted by an unknown male suspect.
On April 22, as a result of media coverage, the 28-year-old suspect from Markham turned himself in and has been charged. Investigators are urging any witnesses, additional victims or anyone with information to come forward.
A sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature. York Regional Police would like to encourage anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a sexual assault to come forward and report the incident to police. There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence.
