Celebrating Markham’s top athletes

On September 22, the community gathered to celebrate its local world-class athletes with a vibrant parade and ceremony.

The parade began at Andre De Grasse Street and concluded at University Boulevard. Fire trucks and police escorted athletes, adding to the excitement of the day.

Among the honoured athletes were Paralympic bronze medalist Marissa Papaconstantinou, four-time Olympic badminton player Michelle Li, two-time Olympian Nyl Yakura, Pan American Games medalist Ruien Xiao, and the celebrated Andre De Grasse, who helped secure gold in the 4x100m relay this summer, bringing his Olympic medal count to seven.

The crowd cheered at the Markham Pan Am Centre as each athlete was introduced. The ceremony, accompanied by the stirring music of the Philippine Heritage Band, featured speeches from local leaders, including MP Paul Chiang and MPP Logan Kanapathi, who commended the athletes for their remarkable achievements.

Mayor Frank Scarpitti proudly highlighted Markham’s diversity. “To come together from a beautiful tapestry with rich culture, ambition, and resilience,” he said. “Today, we celebrate the athletes who exemplify all of these qualities.”

Jane Lu closed the event with a moving rendition of “One Moment in Time,” leaving the community inspired to pursue their dreams.
