Canada’s top badminton player to compete at YONEX Canada Open

Canadian international badminton player Victor Lai made history this month, becoming the first Canadian to win a Super 1000 on the HSBC World Tour at the Istora Senayan Jakarta.

Lai beat Jonatan Christie, the No. 5 World Ranked player from Indonesia, in the Men’s Singles 21-19 and 21-8. The POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026 is among the most prestigious tournaments on the HSBC BWF World Tour, with a $1.450 million USD prize purse for winners.

“What a tournament for Victor,” said Badminton Canada’s National Team Head Coach Mike Butler. “He had several decisive wins against top players in the world and capped it off against one of Indonesia’s finest. So proud of Victor. It could not happen to a more deserving person. The future is bright for a now top 10 Canadian player.”

With the win, Lai won $101,500USD in prize money, nearly doubling his career totals. He also will win 12,000 ranking points, which means a big jump on the BWF World Tour Rankings. He is currently ranked No. 14, Badminton Canada reports.

Over the last year, Lai has posted tremendous results: 2nd at the YONEX Canada Open, 3rd at the BWF World Championships, 3rd in the YONEX All England Open, 1st at the Pan Am Individual Championships and now 1st in the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026.

The first chance to catch Lai on home soil will be at the YONEX Canada Open, which runs June 30 to July 5 at the Markham Pan Am Centre. Tickets are available here.
