Annual Canada Day celebrations return

Juno Award-nominated singer and actress Fefe Dobson will highlight the City of Markham’s annual Canada Day celebrations, which will feature free activities for the entire family to enjoy.

“Since her platinum-certified debut album in 2003, she has been paving the way with her rock-pop sound,” Mayor Frank Scarpitti says of Dobson. “Last year she released her latest album with her classic blend of rock pop melodies. We can’t wait to celebrate Canada Day with Fefe Dobson helping us to get the party started.”

The celebrations, presented by Tim Hortons, take place at Markham Centre in downtown Markham on Monday, July 1 from 3 to 11 p.m. “This year we’ll have two kids’ zones – meaning double the fun for everyone,” says Canada Day Co-Chair and Councillor Amanda Yeung Collucci.

“In Zone 1, be ready to explore our Sensory Activity Zone and a variety of inflatables, including a big slide, climbing wall, axe throwing and more. Zone 2 will have airbrush tattoos, a colouring area and our friends from Hands on Exotics will be back to get attendees up close and personal with some friendly animals.”

Doo Doo the Clown hits the main stage again this year. Made famous in the hit movie, Billy Madison, he has been an annual fixture in Markham’s Canada Day celebrations for years. Aaron Matthews will offer a mix of laughter, dancing and inspiring stories. The Chinese Collective Arts Association will also perform on the main stage. The annual fireworks display begins at 10 p.m. and caps off celebrations.

There will be plenty of free parking available onsite. The event location at Birchmount Road and Enterprise Boulevard is easily accessible by transit. Food vendors will offer a variety of eats at food trucks and food booths. To learn more about Markham’s Canada Day celebrations, including the schedule of events, visit
