ALS Double Play’s 8th Annual Walk unites Markham for ALS Awareness Month

June is ALS Awareness Month in Canada, a time to raise awareness and stand with those affected by this devastating disease. In Markham, ALS Double Play is inviting the community to do just that at its 8th Annual Intentional Walk for ALS on June 7 in Downtown Markham.

Each year, the walk brings together old friends and new faces to honour loved ones, support people currently living with ALS, and raise vital funds for ALS research. Many return year after year, even after loss, because the event has become a place of support, healing and hope.

This year, ALS Double Play is proud to welcome Sonia Cacciacarro and her children, Alex, Andrea, and Simona, as the 2025 Walk Ambassadors. Sonia lost her husband Gianni to ALS in 2022 after a short but courageous battle. She shares: “It’s not just a walk, it’s a powerful reminder of the importance of community, support, and hope. Together we raise awareness, fund critical research, and move closer to finding a cure.”

The 2025 walk theme is “We’re Better Together” — a message that deeply resonates with the ALS community. “You cannot live through ALS without your community, and you cannot heal on your own,” says ALS Double Play founder Cherrie-Marie Chiu. “That’s why this walk matters so much.”

While the cause is serious, the day is also filled with joy. The event features a high-energy dance warm-up, visits with Markham Fire and their truck, carousel rides, face painting, a photo booth, and a nourishing lunch for all participants. It’s a day that uplifts while making an impact.

The weekend continues with a special flag-raising ceremony on June 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the City of Markham’s community flagpole, in recognition of ALS Awareness Week. Everyone is welcome to attend and show their support.

As part of ALS Awareness Month, ALS Double Play is also partnering with Markham Public Libraries for two special community events: a conversation with Ian, who is living with ALS, on June 18, and a family card-making session on June 21 to support families affected by the disease.
