ALS Double Play and MPL partner for uplifting ALS awareness events
This June, in recognition of ALS Awareness Month in Canada, ALS Double Play is partnering with Markham Public Library to offer two special events that shine a light on ALS through connection, compassion, and creativity.
On June 18 at 6 p.m., the Milliken Mills Branch will host “ALS Awareness Month: Living with ALS – A Conversation.” The event features Ian, a former high school teacher who lived an active and full life before being diagnosed with ALS. Ian will share his experience of living with the disease, offering an honest, human perspective that highlights both the challenges and the everyday moments that still bring joy. The conversation will be co-facilitated by Cherrie-Marie Chiu, founder of ALS Double Play, who will also share her personal story of losing her brother to ALS and how that led to starting the organization. The evening will include insights into current ALS research and offer practical ways attendees can support friends and family members who may be affected. It’s an opportunity to learn, connect, and feel inspired by the resilience of the human spirit.
Then, on June 21 at 11 a.m., families are invited to the Unionville Branch for “ALS Awareness Month: Family Card Making.” This warm and interactive event begins with a gentle, age-appropriate explanation of ALS, followed by a card-making activity. Each card will offer a message of support, care, and kindness, bringing real comfort and happiness to the recipients.
Throughout the month, Markham Public Library branches will also highlight books featuring ALS for all ages, which are available to borrow in print and online. Free ALS bookmarks from ALS Double Play will be available at all locations while supplies last.
These new events mark the beginning of ALS Double Play’s partnership with Markham Public Library. Free of charge, both events aim to raise awareness, encourage understanding, and build a more compassionate community for people affected by ALS.
