New executive role to provide enterprise leadership
The City of Markham has created a new executive role to drive organizational performance, business transformation and continued responsible AI adoption.
Mayor Frank Scarpitti appointed Chief Information Officer Sumon Acharjee the municipality’s first Chief Enterprise Performance and Innovation Officer, effective September 17.
Acharjee will report directly to Chief Administrative Officer Andy Taylor and will join the City’s Executive Leadership Team. He will provide enterprise leadership for organizational performance, strategic execution, business transformation and innovation across all Commissions.
His mandate will focus on advancing Markham as a high-performing organization through greater alignment, accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement and evidence-based decision-making, the City notes. “Markham has earned its reputation as one of Canada’s most innovative municipalities,” Scarpitti says.
“In a rapidly changing world, we must continue to evolve and lead. Sumon’s appointment strengthens our commitment to delivering modern, responsive, and affordable services for residents and businesses. I look forward to his leadership as we continue our pursuit of excellence and innovation, setting a standard that rivals the very best in both the public and private sectors.”
Acharjee has more than 30 years of leadership experience across municipal government, health care, higher education and the private sector under his belt. Since joining the City as Chief Information Officer in 2021, he has led or enabled the Digital Markham Strategy, the Smart City Roadmap, the Enterprise Asset Management program, platform modernization, AI-enabled resident services, cybersecurity enhancements and significant digital service modernization.
The City credits Acharjee’s leadership with contributing to more than a dozen national and international awards recognizing innovation and program excellence. “Major transformation only matters if it delivers measurable, lasting outcomes for the people we serve,” says Taylor. “Sumon brings the experience and the track record to bring our teams together, remove barriers to execution and see our biggest initiatives through. This role will strengthen how we work as one organization and support our staff in delivering their best work.”
