North American bird migration: a truly amazing mass movement

Each autumn, bird enthusiasts follow birds on their southern migration. Global bird migrations are one of nature’s most amazing phenomena. To celebrate, the City of Markham Environmental Advisory Committee MEAC is hosting guided bird walks and a lecture.

The theme this year is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter.” These free events are opportunities to learn more about bird migration and how we can protect birds and their habitats.  They will also include information on what the city is doing to become more Bird Friendly.

It will be fun and informative, with added benefits. Studies show that birding and getting out in nature are good for you.

The three Guided Bird Walk mornings are set for September 12 (Bob Hunter Memorial Park), September 19 (Bercy Park in Thornhill) and October 10 (Swan Lake Park).

The series wraps up on October 17 with an afternoon Talk on Migration by Carly Davenport at the Milliken Mills Library. She will share her love for the natural world, focusing on one of its most awe-inspiring spectacles: North American bird migration. This truly amazing mass movement is one of the largest migrations on the planet, and we are lucky to bear witness to it in Southern Ontario each spring and fall.
