Markham among Canada’s Best Employers

For the fifth consecutive year, the City of Markham has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Employers by Forbes. The 2025 list also recognized a number of companies with a large presence in Markham.

Markham ranked second among municipalities in Canada and twelfth overall for government services.

“Organizational excellence doesn’t come easy these days; it requires a strong commitment to employees and creating a culture of accountability along with embracing creativity and innovation,” says Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “Ranking the second-best city in all of Canada sets us apart from many cities thanks to our senior management and all our employees.”

Markham credits its strength as an employer to its People Plan, which focuses on onboarding, providing continuous opportunities for development and learning, wellness initiatives, recognition, open communication, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion.

Also on Canada’s Best Employers 2025 list: Tesla, Hallmark Canada, Oak Valley Health, SE Health, Honda Canada, Pet Valu, IBM, TD Bank Group, AMD (Canada), Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions and General Motors. The Regional Municipality of York also made the list.

To determine the ranking, Forbes partnered with market research firm Statista to survey more than 40,000 Canada-based employees working for companies and institutions that employ at least 500 individuals within Canada.

Survey respondents – who remained anonymous so they could answer freely – were asked if they’d recommend their employer to others and to rate it based on a range of criteria, including salary, work flexibility, training programs and opportunities to advance. Participants were also asked if they’d recommend their previous employers (within the past two years) and those employers they knew through their experience in the industry or through friends or family who worked there.

Responses were tallied and the analysis included survey data from the last three years, which allowed for a robust assessment of organizations that consistently ranked well versus those that may have had just one good year. The more recent data and the evaluations from current employees were weighted more heavily than others. Each employer was given a score and the top 300 organizations made the list.
