10,000 Tree Group hosts Community Tree Planting Events

The 10,000 Tree Group will host community tree-planting events to restore wildlife habitat. These events will occur at Bruce’s Mill Conversation Park during Earth Week on April 26 -27, Austin Drive Park on May 10, and Monarch Park on June 7.

Founded in 1989 as an offshoot of the Save the Rouge Valley Group, the 10,000 Tree Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to environmental conservation. The group’s signature Earth Week event has grown into a tradition, attracting over 1,500 volunteers annually. Last year, volunteers planted over 8,800 trees and shrubs, restoring 3.7 hectares of habitat.

The group’s planting efforts help protect local creeks and streams from soil erosion, support existing forests, and expand wildlife corridors.

Robert Roszell, Chair of 10,000 Trees, has volunteered for over 30 years. He emphasized the lasting impact of the events, saying, “Events that bring the general public out even when it rains have a big impact. Forty per cent of our participants are high school students. This encounter with nature will stay with them for a lifetime. I know when I planted trees for Scouts Canada a half a century ago, it left an impression with me for a lifetime.”

Patrick Wong, Vice Chair at 10,000 Trees, highlights youth impact, saying, “Over the last 3 years, we have seen many more young people at our planting events. We hope that their time at our events will help them to not only better appreciate the outdoors but also to pass on that love for the environment to future generations.”
