York Regional Police Hosts Community Safety Town Hall

On February 1, York Regional Police, in collaboration with MP Paul Chiang, Councillor Reid McAlpine and residents from a local WhatsApp safety group, held a Community Safety Town Hall at the Markham police station.

The event featured discussions on bail and release issues, crime prevention strategies, and crime reports.

Presenter Constable Wojtulewicz shared some helpful safety tips with the attendees reminding them that preventing crime is a group effort.

“I’m here to talk to you about what you can do to help yourself,” he said. “Remember, one thing, we are not going to arrest our way out of the crime.” He highlighted the benefits of home security systems, timed lighting, parking your car in the garage, adding lighting to the exterior of your home and asking a neighbour to check on your home when you are away.

Residents had the opportunity to engage in a Q&A session with members of the YRP team and political leaders, fostering dialogue aimed at enhancing community safety.

The Community Safety Map, available on the YRP website, shows the different types of crime committed by area in the nine municipalities.

The Security Camera Registry provides an online solution for members of the community to note where they have installed residential or commercial security cameras that can assist YRP as needed.
