Transit fares set to increase on July 1

If you rely on public transit to get around, you’ll want to pay attention to York Region Transit (YRT) summer service changes, including schedule, route and fare changes.

YRT is also adjusting its On-Request services, which include On-Request 65+.

It allows seniors to request transit when and where you need it. The service is offered throughout York Region for seniors who want to try taking public transit using a smaller vehicle such as sedans, minivans and small buses that picks you up at your home. A YRT-marked vehicle will pick you up and take you directly to your desired location within five kilometres of your home.

The service is available weekdays beginning at 7 a.m. The last pick-up time is 2:45 p.m. To book a ride during service hours, call 1-866-744-1119 on the same day you would like to travel. Wait for the date and time to be spoken, press ‘4′ then ‘5’ to speak with a trip reservationist.

Effective Sunday, June 30, high school special routes are suspended for summer holidays. Route 360 Route 360 – Vaughan Mills/Wonderland will service Canada’s Wonderland seven days a week. A three per cent annual transit fare increase – the first since 2019 – takes effect on Monday, July 1 to help address the rising costs of operating the transit system.

Discounted YRT fares continue to be offered through the PRESTO card and PRESTO mobile wallet. The adult (ages 20 to 64 years) fare, for example, will increase from $3.88 to $, while the youth (ages 13 to 19 years) will increase from $3.03 to $3.10, and the senior and child (ages six to 12 years) rate will each increase from $2.40 to $2.45. If using cash, credit or debit, the rate will increase from $4.25 to $4.40. Children five years and under ride free

YRT offers several discount and fare assistance programs such as the Transit Assistance Program, One Fare, Ride to GO and Fare Capping. For more information, visit yrt.ca/FareChanges.
