Tours, art classes, more at Varley Art Gallery

From tours of current exhibitions and art classes to weekend markets and renting an art box, the Varley Art Gallery of Markham has a full lineup of activities planned this summer.

The gallery invites you to join its animateurs for free 30-minute tours of its 2024 Summer Exhibitions – To go boldly and Summer Solstice – every weekend throughout the summer. Tours are available in English on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and in Cantonese on Saturdays at 11 a.m.

On Wednesday, July 17, you’re invited to join To go boldly exhibiting artists Brendan Lee Satish Tang and Syrus Marcus Ware, curator Anik Glaude and Dr. Marissa Largo for a discussion about art and futurism. Registration is required.

Rent an Art Box and unleash your creativity outdoors with en plein air painting. Each box comes with everything you need to sketch or paint outside. The gallery suggests exploring the outdoors as Fred Varley did and capture the beauty of Main Street Unionville or Toogood Pond Park. The boxes are available for rent to those ages four years and older for $12.50 through September. Boxes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Speak to front desk staff to inquire about availability or to request a rental.

Weekends Markets at the Varley feature the Mom Market on Saturdays, July 6 and 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Founded in 2019, the Mom Market was started as an outlet for those in the small shop community to grow and promote their small businesses. As Canada’s original collective market, it’s devoted to showcasing small business owners from across the country in high-quality, curated vendor markets.

Crafteria: Art & Handmade Bazaar 2024 will be held Sunday, July 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Asian artists showcase the beauty of Asian Art and promote their creative works. The market features more than 30 craft booths as well as live music performances and craft workshops.

The gallery offers Introduction to Drawing, Introduction to Life Drawing, Introduction to Portrait Drawing, Introduction to Oil Painting, Introduction to Landscape Painting and other workshops in August. The gallery is extending its hours this summer.
