Toogood Pond partially drained for rehabilitation projects
Toogood Pond is known as one of Markhams beautiful landmarks, but it looks more like a swamp lately, and most residents have no idea what is happening.
It is not a natural occurrence caused by a lack of rain; it’s a multi-year city plan Markham is carrying out to improve the park.
Phase one, which involved installing safety signs and fencing around the park, was completed in 2024.
Phase two includes rehabilitation work on the dam structure, including installing a cofferdam to manage water on the downstream side of the dam bays.
The City of Markham has dewatered areas over the foundation to expose the concrete footings, concrete work, and repairs, among others. Which explains the noticeable decline in water levels in the pond. Phase two was originally set to be completed by October 2026; however, a new deadline is currently being reviewed.
Naturally, the City of Markham has taken extensive measures to ensure the safety of the wildlife in and around Toogood Pond.
According to the city, a permit from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry was obtained, which included reviewing and accepting a fisheries plan for the dam rehabilitation. The permit sets out the measures required to protect fish and aquatic habitat during construction.
In addition, an environmental consultant will monitor aquatic conditions and carry out fish rescue activities in accordance with the approved fisheries plan.
Residents have also likely noticed the closing of the north boardwalk and the fishing pier. Both structures are set for rehabilitation and replacement of deteriorated components. The closed walking areas and the two structures are set to reopen in November 2026.
Phase three of the Toogood Pond project will begin in early 2027 and focus on vegetation clearing, removing trees identified for removal, and restoring the dam embankments.
Upon completion, Toogood Pond Park will offer safe amenities, a functioning and restructured dam, and rehabilitated areas affected by construction.
