Thornlea Thunder clinch 3rd consecutive York Region Volleyball title

The Thornlea Thunder triumphed in their third straight York Region Senior Girls volleyball championship on February 20, defeating St. Robert’s in a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory.

After dropping the first two sets, the Thunder fought back to win the match in five sets, solidifying their dominance in the region.

This marks the team’s third consecutive title and a remarkable four-peat, as they also secured the Junior Girls title four years ago.

Standout performances came from Captain Faith Hughes and Isabel Penfound, whose exceptional blocking and Hughes’s powerful serving were key moments in the victory. Jasmine Jhung’s defence from the power position was stellar, including a match-winning block on St. Robert’s top hitter. Tessa Mark came through in the clutch with remarkable defence, smashes, and serves, being named the game’s MVP.

Head coach Steve Hutchison and assistants Jim Fletcher and Tyler Reed were elated with the team’s performance, culminating in a 32-2 season record.

The Thunder now set their sights on the OFSAA championships in Burlington, scheduled from March 3 to 5.
