The Legend of Huli

As a prelude to the Chinese New Year, The Legend of Huli delivers an enchanting experience, based on ancient legends of the Celestial Fox collected by Chinese philosopher Pu Songling (1640-1715).

The show – which can be appreciated by audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds – depicts a celestial fox who descends to Earth and proceeds to cause trouble by creating transformations.

Artistic director and guitarist Roman Smirnov, a versatile composer and arranger of numerous musical genres, headlines the cast of musicians and dancers who interact with one another in a dialogue of actions and emotions.

Joining him are Chinese Canadian pipa virtuoso Wen Zhao (“the Jimi Hendrix of the pipa” – The WholeNote; Tafelmusik’s The Four Seasons Mosaic), Ukrainian Mexican cellist Zhenya Kobylyanska (National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Odessa); classical and contemporary dancers Roman Nesterov and Karolina Nesterova (formerly with the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg), and emerging Canadian dancer Hayley Ng.

The light show, and music ranging from baroque to flamenco, jazz, world music, and modern classics add to make an engrossing experience.

NP Entertainment presents The Legend of Huli on Jan. 20 and 21 at Greenwin Theatre in the Meridan Arts Centre.
