Sign up to Run for the Cure
You’re invited to sign up now and support all Canadians impacted by breast cancer by taking part in the Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The run takes place on Sunday, Oct. 6 and is Canada’s largest single-day, volunteer-led event in support of the breast cancer cause. More than 46,000 people across the country participated in the run last year.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Canadian women. An estimated 27,900 Canadians are diagnosed with breast cancer every year and thousands more are living with the disease, the Canadian Cancer Society reports.
There are many risks for breast cancer, including a family history of cancer and having dense breasts. Screening tests help find breast cancer before any symptoms develop. When breast cancer is found and treated early, the chances of successful treatment are better. The Canadian Cancer Society recommends having a mammogram every two years if you’re 40 to 74 years old. If you’re aged 75 or older, talk to your health-care provider about whether having a mammogram is right for you.
To register for this year’s Canadian Cancer Society CIBC Run for the Cure, start by finding your local event under your province. Select your location and then sign up to begin the registration process. The Richmond Hill/Markham run kicks off at Richmond Green Park at 1300 Elgin Mills Rd. E. Registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 9:15 a.m. The five-kilometre and one-kilometre runs each begin at 10 a.m.
Your support helps thousands of people get to their breast cancer treatments, provides community and support through peer support programs, provides more than 3,300 wigs, headwear and breast prostheses, and funds breast cancer research.
