Pink Cars supports local seniors

March 17th, 2020 is a day we will all remember. This was the day in which Premier Doug Ford declared a state of emergency against Covid-19.

As the world struggled with its battle to flatten the curve it was matched by a deficit of personal protective equipment. Sewers around the world became creative and started to sew face masks and other personal protective equipment to support and protect front-line workers and their loved ones.

What started as a small Markham group of sewing enthusiasts quickly turned into a region-wide army which today consists of over 300 active volunteers all rallying together to help in any possible way. WE Care – York Region continues as a community volunteer group to help in times of urgent need.

They are now setting up yet another initiative to help in the next steps of COVID-19, by providing seniors 80+ with assistance booking their vaccination appointment or with transportation to their appointment.

Shanta Sundarason who started WE Care – York Region has added a new volunteer initiative to the list – Pink Cars which helps seniors with booking their vaccination appointment and getting to their appointment. With the Help of Neha Banerjea as the marketing and communications advisor, long-term volunteer Enid Reyes-Martin and Councillor Andrew Keyes, the volunteer group is up and running and ready to continue their give-back mission.

Pink Cars has collaborated with Mirja Raita, Executive Director of Volunteer Markham and together will ensure that they are able to provide as much assistance as possible to seniors that are in need of support.

“We started this journey nearly a year ago, providing over 50,000 PPE items to help protect many vulnerable members of our community against the virus,” Sundarason said. “It is only fitting that we now help to ensure that our vulnerable sector is protected through vaccination at the soonest possible time.”

Pink Cars is looking for additional volunteer drivers to help ferry our seniors in need, to and from their appointment.
