Nominations open for City of Markham Ward 7 councillor by-election

A municipal by-election has been called for Ward 7 in the City of Markham. Voting day will take place on September 29, 2025. 
The by-election has been called to fill the vacant Ward 7 Councillor seat following Juanita Nathan’s election to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Pickering–Brooklin.
At a City Council meeting held on Tuesday, June 24, Markham City Council directed staff to begin the by-election process, allowing eligible voters in Ward 7 to elect a new local councillor for the remainder of the current council term.

Elections are a cornerstone of our local democracy, and the upcoming Ward 7 by-election is an important opportunity for residents to have their say in who represents their community,” says Kimberley Kitteringham, City Clerk and Returning Officer for Elections Markham. “Whether you’re considering running for office or preparing to vote, Elections Markham is here to ensure the process is transparent, accessible, and easy to navigate.”

Candidate nominations open on June 30 at 8:30 a.m. and will be accepted until August 15 at 2 p.m.

Individuals interested in running must meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996. Candidates can register online using Elections Markham’s secure nomination portal. Advance voting is available from Friday, September 26 to Sunday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting day is September 29 from, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
