Newly-reopened Main Street Unionville nears completion
Main Street Unionville has reopened to vehicle and pedestrian traffic between Carlton Road and south of the railway tracks.
With major construction under Phase 3 now complete, the project is transitioning into ‘close-out activities. ‘
Those activities include removing the old lamp posts, switching the new lamp posts to the permanent power supply, and completing the works on Victoria Avenue and surrounding area. Those remaining items don’t require road closures and will continue through spring.
Main Street Unionville is a heritage village and the City of Markham conducted numerous studies since 2013 to guide its future development. The Main Street Unionville Community Vision Plan (2015) identified various challenges and opportunities, leading to the initiation of the Main Street Unionville Streetscape Master Plan for the Commercial Core in 2018. The preferred streetscape concept received Council approval in March 2022.
The Main Street Unionville Reconstruction Project includes full reconstruction of the roadway, sidewalks and boulevards; new interlocking pavers and streetscape features; underground infrastructure upgrades, including watermain and storm servicing; and new lighting, street furniture and accessibility improvements.
The City of Markham recognizes that the project was “complex and at times disruptive” and thanks the Main Street Unionville community, especially local businesses, residents and property owners, for their “patience, resilience and cooperation” throughout construction.
